Obituary of Doris I. Thompson

Doris I. Thompson, 93, of Iowa City, died Friday, May 16, 2014, at Legacy Point in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 2pm Monday, May 19, 2014, at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Iowa City. Visitation will be at 1pm Monday at the church where an O.E.S. memorial service will be at 1:30. Burial with Military Honors will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made in her memory to St. Mark's United Methodist Church or Hospice Compassus. Online condolences may be sent for her family through the web @ www.gayandciha.com. Doris Irene Meyers was born November 18, 1920, in Nichols, Iowa, the daughter of Gustav and Anna (Geirse) Meyers. Following graduation from Nichols High School, she attended St. Luke's Nursing School in Davenport, Iowa, where she received her Registered Nursing Degree. She worked at St. Luke's Hospital in Davenport before entering the United States Army during the WWII and also served in Korean Conflict as a nurse stationed in the Pacific. Returning to Iowa she worked at the Veterans Domiciliary in Clinton and when the Veterans Administration Hospital was built in Iowa City, she and her husband moved here where she worked for many years as a registered nurse before her retirement. Doris married Roy G. Thompson on September 11, 1953, in Rock Island, IL. The couple made their home in Iowa City for many years. He died January 29, 1996. She was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, Past Worthy Matron of Order of the Eastern Star, Jessamine Chapter #135; Bethlehem White Shrine # 8, Rebekah Lodge, the Social Order of the Beauceant, and the Daughters of the Nile. Her family includes her niece Susan "Kris" (Steve) Bradish of Nichols; brother-in-law, T.R. Thompson of Marshalltown; 3 great nieces, 1 great nephew and a host of dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, brother and his wife, Donald and Marilyn Meyers; and a nephew, Jim Meyers. Doris's family and her friends would like to thank all the wonderful souls at Legacy Point, and staff of Hospice Compassus for the loving, professional, and compassionate care of Doris during her last days.
