Obituary of John R. Singer

Dr. John R. “Rollie” Singer, age 85 of 709 Normandy Drive, Iowa City died at his home, Tuesday, June 28, 2005, following a lengthy illness. Private family services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in his memory to Iowa City Hospice or the Department of Psychiatry c/o University of Iowa Foundation. Online condolences may be sent for his family through our website @www.gayandciha.com. Dr. Singer was born October 5, 1919, in Omaha, NE, the son of John Andrew and Frances (Johnson) Singer. He graduated from Newton High School in 1937. He later graduated from the University Of Iowa College Of Medicine in 1945. He married Marjorie Wormley in 1944, in Newton, Iowa. From 1946 to 1948 in World War II, he served in the United States Army, serving as a flight surgeon with the Air Weather Squadron on Guam from 1947-1948. Following service, he returned to Newton, where he practiced medicine and surgery for twenty years. In 1968, Dr. Singer returned to the University Of Iowa College Of Medicine where he completed his residency in Psychiatry. At the University of Iowa, he served as staff psychiatrist in Student Health from 1971 to his retiring in 1988. His family includes his wife, Marjorie; three children, Nancy DeLuna of Palm Desert, CA, Ellen McRae and her husband, Dr. Parker McRae of Peoria Heights, IL, and Donn Singer of Iowa City; five grandchildren, Carrie O’Neil, Brian DeLuna, Drew McRae, Collin McRae, and Annie McRae; great-granddaughter, Lauren Singer O’Neil; brother, William A. Singer of Ames; two sisters-in-law, Betty Singer of Iowa City and Ruth Wormley of Newton; brother-in-law, Harold Tiedje of Newton and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son, Stephen Singer and a brother, Frank Budde Singer.
