Obituary of Cathryn E. Christensen

Cathryn E. “Katie” Christensen, age 81 formerly of 2801 Highway 6 East, Iowa City died Thursday, February 10, 2005 at the Greenwood Manor Care Center in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, February 14, 2005, at the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa with burial at the Oak Field Cemetery in rural Audubon County. Visitation will be on Monday at the funeral home in Atlantic from 12 noon until services. In Iowa City a visitation will be held on Saturday from 12 noon until 2pm at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. A memorial fund has been established in Katie’s memory. (Curry) Christensen was born March 1, 1923, in Atlantic, Iowa the daughter of Ralph and Audrey (Trailer) Curry. Following her education, she taught in one-room schoolhouses in the Atlantic area for nearly ten years. On June 18, 1945, she married Charles Christensen at Oak Hill, Iowa. She was a postal clerk in Brayton, Iowa for a number of years. In 1965, they moved to Amana, Iowa where she was employed at the Colony Inn for over twenty-two years, retiring in 1988. At this time, the couple moved to Iowa City where she enjoyed her job with Hardee’s as their “greeter” for a couple of years. She was a member of the Brayton American Legion, and the Brayton Lutheran Church. Her family includes her husband, Charles of Iowa City; daughter and her husband, Sharon and Charles Burlingame of Coralville; son and his wife, John and Kathy Christensen of Iowa City; grandchildren, Jennifer Fredericks and her husband, Captain Steve Fredericks of Ft. Campbell, KY, Stacey Davies and her husband, Tom of Ankeny, Iowa; and Shawn Burlingame and his fiancé, Tiffany Hemann of Washington, Iowa; great-granddaughters, Ryleigh and Harper Fredericks both of Ft. Campbell, KY; a brother and his wife, John “Jack” and Fern Curry of Exira; and a sister, Harriett Kirk of Exira. Katie was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law: Norman Kirk. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City and Roland Funeral Service of Atlantic is caring for Katie’s family and her services.
