Obituary of Ernest E. Krogh, Sr.

Ernest E. “Ernie” Krogh Sr., age 83 of rural West Branch died Tuesday, June 15, 2004, at Crestview Care Center in West Branch following complications of surgery. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, June 18, 2004, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Harlan Gillespie officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7p.m., Thursday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established in Ernie’s memory. Ernest Edward Krogh was born January 20, 1921, in Bettendorf, Iowa the son of Alfred. and Regina (Nielsen) Krogh. Growing up in this area, he graduated from University High School in 1939. During World War II, Ernie served his country in the United States Marines, serving in Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, New Georgia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, and New Guinea. After he returned stateside, Ernie met his future wife, Charlotte Mary Colson, who was also a Marine, while both were stationed in Washington D.C. They married on March 23, 1945 in Arlington, VA. The couple returned to Iowa where for many years he farmed in the Lone Tree and West Branch areas. Ernie was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W., IOOF, Moose Lodge, and the Danish Brotherhood. His family includes his wife, Charlotte; two sons, Ed Krogh and his wife, Suzanne of Iowa City, and Dave Krogh and partner, Vicki Harkins of West Branch; daughter, Cindy MacGowan of West Liberty; five grandchildren, Jennifer Eldred and her husband, Mark, Michael Krogh, Kara Krogh, Jessica Karr, and Clayton “C.J.” Karr; brother and his wife, Paul and Mildred Krogh of Lone Tree, and two sisters and their husbands, Elsie and Earl Barnes of Iowa City and Betty Jean and Rollie Best of Decatur, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, and a brother and his wife, Gunnar and Betty Mae Krogh, preceded him in death. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Ernie’s family and his services.
