Obituary of Mildred A. Sass

Mildred A. Sass, 83, formerly of 425 N. Dubuque Street, North Liberty died Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at the Lone Tree Health Care Center in Lone Tree following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Renee Lunemann officiating. Burial will be in the Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Mildred Sass Memorial Fund. Online condolences may sent for Mildred’s family through out website @www.gayandciha.com. Mildred was born October 31, 1921, in Fremont Township, Johnson County to William and Freda (Rieland) Bell. Mildred graduated from Sharon Center School and attended the business school in Iowa City. She married Marvin Sass on May 8, 1940 in Johnson County. They farmed north of Hills from 1945 to 1958 when they moved to North Liberty. There they managed the North Liberty Lumber Company and the North Liberty Feed and Grain till 1965. In 1965 they built and managed the Pleasant View Lodge until 1975. Mildred was a member of the North Liberty American Legion. She wintered some 20 years in Zapata, Texas and enjoyed cards, camping and fishing. Her family includes a daughter Marcia and her husband Steve Landuyt of North Liberty, sons, Maynard of Hinckley, California and Maurice and wife, Sherry of Riverside; grandchildren Kim Landuyt of North Liberty, Debbie and her husband Lynn Rhinehart of North Liberty, Cara Sorrells and her husband Brett of Washington, Iowa, Chris and his wife Nancy Sass of Lone Tree, David Sass of North Liberty, Karla Sass of Knoxville, Tennessee and Darla Sass of Spring Grove, Minnesota, and 14 great-grandchildren, a sister Gertrude Mumm of Quasqueton, brothers, Lester Bell of Lone Tree and Clifford and his wife Ramona Bell of Iowa City and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Bell of Iowa City. Mildred was preceded by her parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters and a granddaughter, Stacey. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Services of Iowa City is caring for Mildred’s family and her services.
