Obituary of William H. Whetstine, Sr.

William H. “Bill” Whetstine Sr., age 75 of 2254 South Riverside Drive, Iowa City died at his home on Friday, June 24, 2005. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 28, 2005, at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Monday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. A memorial fund has been established in Bill’s memory. William Harvey Whetstine Sr. was born March 19, 1930, near Wellman, Iowa the son of Lloyd and Lulu (Ferris) Whetstine. Following graduation from high school, Bill entered the United States Army, serving before and during the Korean Conflict. On July 22, 1958, Bill married Evyonne M. Cariens in Iowa City. Bill worked as a laborer in the concrete and construction fields. He also was a substance abuse counselor, and one of the founding directors of HACAP. Bill was a member of the VFW, and served on a task force established by then President Ronald Regan for Veterans. His family includes his wife, Evyonne; daughters, Linda Bechen and her husband, Jon of Cedar Rapids, Theresa Schakel of Pella, Donna Whetstine of Iowa City, and Lisa Forrester and her husband, William of Cedar Rapids; one son and his wife, William H. Whetstine Jr. and Susan of Muscatine; many grandchildren, and three children from a previous marriage; brothers, Jimmy Whetstine of North Liberty, and Donny Whetstine of Iowa City. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, a son, David, daughter, Barb Grandstaff, five brothers and two sisters. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Bill’s family and his services.
