Obituary of George R. Zimmerman

George Richard Zimmerman, age 95 formerly of 721 Dearborn Street, Iowa City died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty, Iowa following a lengthy illness. No services are planned at this time, burial will be at the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City, Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for George’s family and his arrangements. George Richard Zimmerman was born September 13, 1909, in Dowagiac, Michigan. He was the son of Alfred D. and Anne (Garnet) Zimmerman. George married Marie A. Waters on May 5, 1936, in Kahoka, MO. The couple lived in Iowa City where he was an Iowa City Police Officer and City bus driver. During World War II, he served in the United States Army. Following the war, he and Marie owned Iowa Cab Company for a number of years. They sold the the cab company and George drove for Yellow Cab Company for over 37 years. George was a 60 year member of the American Legion Post No. 17 in Iowa City. His family includes two brother-in-laws, Everett Waters and his wife, Ruth of Lynnfield, MA, and Wayne Waters and his wife, Melba of Jacksonville, FL; sister-in-law, Irene E. Bowers of Iowa City; nieces, Dawn Towey of Rangeley, ME, Jana Winsor of Georgetown, MA, Pam Langfitt of Jacksonville, FL, and Cherie Nicola of Coralville, IA; nephews, Gregg Waters of Chandler, AZ, and Michael Bowers of Coralville, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Marie in February of 2000, a brother, Elmer Zimmerman, and a brother-in-law, Robert Bowers.
