Duane Means
1920 - 2014
Condolences
I worked for Duane at Means Grocery during my college years, 1963-1967. I was very fond of him as my boss. I am saddened to read about his passing.
My two younger brothers and I always went into the Means Bros. Grocery store to get bread and milk for our mother. I have fond memories of Mr. Means; he always smiled and was very kind and courteous to us, even though we were just neighborhood children. I have thought of him many times through the years. I am glad he had a wonderful, loving family. My deepest sympathies.
Dear Ginny, Caroline, Bill, Mary and Melanie and families,
Sympathy to the Means family. May your memories comfort you.
So sorry for your loss. I will miss Uncle Duane, and the times we had when I would come to Iowa City.
Bill, my deepest condolences to you and your family.
Dear Means Family, When I first moved to Iowa City I would be walking on Dubuque Street and often saw a pleasant man walking to or from downtown. He always smiled and said hello.
When I think of Uncle Duane, I thing of a humble, caring man He was so sweet to our family when mom passed away. He kept in touch to make sure we were ok. He was just a lovely individual and will be missed Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
So sorry for your loss family, I will miss Duane being a good neighbor .
Deepest sympathy to the Means and Eastman families. I enjoyed getting to know Mr. and Mrs. Means at Sigma Theta Tau/Gamma Chapter brunch events at which the Betty Means award was presented. He will be deeply missed. Sincerely, Lou Ann Montgomery, PhD, RN-BC, Past President, STTI Gamma Chapter
Virginia and family - we are so sorry to hear about your loss. Duane was such a special person.
Ginny, Caroline, Bill, Mary & Melanie, all friends and family,
My heart goes out to you. I will forever remember Uncle Duane's infectious smile and peaceful, easy demeanor. Truly a nice guy and a huge influence on my life. I can remember a particularly valuable lesson on Brush technique at age 7 on my first snare drum that helped pave the way to a certain level of dynamics and percussive sensitivity that has helped me with my drumming career to this day! Thank you Uncle Duane! There are many many more memories that I would love to share including all of those magical Christmas eve's at Grandma and Grandpa Means house on Lexington Ave. in Iowa City. More recently, we were thrilled to have Duane and Ginny at our wedding in Woonsocket South Dakota 10 years ago now!
They drove all the way out on very short notice and helped to make the day feel so special. On a final note, we were so happy to help get a drum set back into Duane's home after many years of not having one. I have always been impressed that he stuck with his passion for drumming/percussion and music. THANK YOU UNCLE DUANE! Much love to you all!
Dearest Melanie, Mary, and Family, I am sorry to hear about your dad passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. Cherish your memories. Love, Ellen (Day) Tripp Donahue, Iowa.
When I was growing up in Iowa City, Duane Means was the young man who delivered our groceries. A few years later he became our neighbor and then our banker. Duane was a gentle soul. Always anxious to help, he will long be remembered for his kindness and ready smile. Our condolences go out to all of his family and friends.
