Obituary of Laura L. Memler

Laura L. Memler, age 101 formerly of 1709 East College Street, Iowa City, died Monday, January 23, 2006, at the Iowa City Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, January 28, 2006, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Courtney Ball officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. Saturday until services at the funeral home. Following the services at the cemetery, a reception will be held at the funeral home for Laura’s family and friends. Memorial donations can be made in her memory to Iowa City Hospice @ 1025 Wade Street, Iowa City, IA 52240. Online condolences may be sent for Laura’s family through our website @www.gayandciha.com. Laura Schindler Memler was born May 27, 1904, in Iowa City the daughter of Joseph and Katherine (Zinkula) Schindler. She was a 1921 graduate of Iowa City City High School, where she has continued to be a member of the alumni association. She married Lloyd Memler October 4, 1927, in Mt. Vernon,Iowa. She has been a lifelong resident of Iowa City where for over seventeen years she worked at the Means Grocery Store in the downtown area, and later at the University of Iowa in the Bureau of Education Research department for thirteen years. Lloyd Memler died in 1966; Laura continued to live at their home on East College Street (nearly seventy-five years since she moved there) until the fall of 2001 when she moved to Legacy Point. In November 2005 she moved to the care center. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City, and also an associate member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Laura loved to play bingo, but most of all she loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was loved by all who knew her, and will be deeply missed. Her family includes her two sons and their wives, Allan and Sandy Memler of Chariton, Iowa, and Jay and Dianne Memler of Naperville, Illinois; five grandchildren, Mary Moon, Linda Sanchez, Liz Millard, Christine Memler, and Douglas Memler; four great-grandchildren, Tara Moon, Kyle Memler, Grant Memler, and Sarah Memler. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lloyd; three brothers, Joseph, Charles and Herman Schindler, and two sisters, Helen Welcher, and Anna Bardsley. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Laura’s family and her services.
