Obituary of Mary Emma Deadman

Mary Emma Deadman age 87 of Iowa City died following a brief illness on Monday, June 28, 2004 at Windmill Manor in Coralville. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 2, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City, burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. For those attending the service parking will be available on Jefferson, Linn and Dubuque Streets. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Memorial donations may be given to the First United Methodist Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association. Online condolences may be sent for family through our website @www.gayandciha.com. Mary Emma White was born on April 15, 1917 in Oskaloosa, Iowa the daughter of Elmer C. and Eunice Maddy White. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School and William Penn College in Oskaloosa. On September 13, 1938 Mary Emma married Ralph Deadman in Davenport. Together they lived in Chicago and Hampton, Iowa until moving to Iowa City in 1960. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Iowa City, the United Methodist Women, the Plum Grove Chapter of the Embroiders Guild of America. While in Iowa City she worked at the University of Iowa Hospital’s and Clinics in the Admissions Office as a “Private Room Hostess”. Mary Emma enjoyed knitting, and needle point. Her children will always remember her ability to do several tasks at once. She spent many hours knitting squares for A.F.S.C. and making caps for newborn babies at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. She was recognized for more than one thousand hours spent knitting caps by Mercy Hospital. Mary Emma was a devoted mother, grandmother and wife for her family. Her family includes her devoted and loving husband of 65 years, Ralph, children, Robert and wife, Diana Deadman of New York City, Charles and wife, Susan of Pompano Beach, Florida, Thomas “Tad” Deadman of Cedar Rapids and Mary “Molly” Deadman of Fredericksburg, Virginia, seven grandchildren, Rachel, Emily, Tammy, Robert, Jade, Levi and Hannah, five great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild along with numerous nieces nephews and cousins. Mary Emma was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister. Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Mary Emma’s family and her services.
