Obituary of Frederic W. Stamler

Frederic W. Stamler M.D. of 137 Penfire Circle, Iowa City died Sunday, November 7, 2004, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics of heart failure. All are welcome to attend a memorial service at the Unitarian Universalist Society, 10 S. Gilbert Street, Iowa City on Friday, November 19, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be given to the Frederic W. Stamler Professorship Fund in care of the University of Iowa Foundation, 1 West Park Road, Iowa City, Iowa 52244; The National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Road, Bethesda, MD 20814; or The Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City. Dr. Stamler was born March 28, 1913, to Mary and William Stamler on a farm near Muscatine, Iowa, after graduating from Muscatine High School, he attended Muscatine Junior College before enrolling in the University of Iowa where he graduated in 1939. He completed medical school in 1943, also at the University of Iowa before performing his internship at the University of Chicago. After internship, he entered the Army Medical Corps where he served in the South Pacific during World War II. Dr. Stamler returned to Iowa City in 1947 and entered the pathology residency program at the University of Iowa. He married Virginia Clauss of Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1948. He remained on the pathology faculty for over forty years, producing numerous scientific and medical publications and taught hundred of medical students, residents, and fellows. He was a member of many local, nationals and international medical and scientific organizations as well as several community organizations, He felt his highest honor came in 1993 when the University of Iowa endowed the Frederic W. Stamler Professorship with funds donated in his honor from his former students, residents and fellows as well as colleagues, friends, and family. A man of varied interest, Dr. Stamler especially enjoyed gardening, Morel mushroom hunting, Hawkeye sports, listening to music, and was a self-described reading addict. Dr. Stamler is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia Stamler, his daughter Jann and husband, Steve Pidgeon, his son John Stamler and wife Virginia Lee Stamler, grandchildren, Ryan and Sarah Pidgeon and Colin Stamler and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Stamler, sisters, Ruth Watts, Mildred Stamler, Esther Darnell, Faith Knowler, and Miriam Ogilivie; son Thomas Michael Stamler and daughter Susan Carol Stamler, who died in childhood from cystic fibrosis.
