Obituary of Linus J. Griffin

Linus J. Griffin, age 93 of Solon died Friday, February 3, 2006, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 7, 2006, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Michael T. Phillips officiating. Burial will be at the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Solon. Visitation will be from 3 to 7pm Monday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service where the National Catholic Society of Foresters in conjunction with the Catholic Order of Foresters will recite a rosary at 4pm. A memorial fund has been established in Linus’s memory. Linus J. Griffin was born December 23, 1912 in Cosgrove, Iowa, the son of Thomas and Sarah “Kate” (Ahearn) Griffin. He graduated from Cosgrove schools. On April 19, 1933, he married Helen Sedlacek. The couple had farmed in the Solon area for many years, where they raised many head of black angus cattle. Helen died June 11, 2003. Linus was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City, the National Catholic Society of Foresters, Catholic Order of Foresters, Farm Bureau, and the Angus Association. His family includes his daughter, Mary Ann Frees and her husband, Robert of Iowa City; two grandchildren, Debra Kabela and her husband, Don of Solon, and David Steinbrech and his wife, Naomi of Solon; three great-grandchildren, David Brown, Monica Steinbrech and Molly Jo Steinbrech. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, an infant daughter, and two brothers, Howard and Louis Griffin.
