Obituary of Fremont Isaacs

Fremont Isaacs age 93 of 4509 Dane Road, Iowa City died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Saturday, September 13, 2003. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September, 17, 2003 at the Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4 to 8:00 p.m. with a Masonic Memorial Service at 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Iowa City Hospice, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church or to Johnson County 4-H. Online condolences may be sent for his family at our website @ www.gayandciha.com. Fremont was born on October 26, 1909 in West Lucas Township Rural Iowa City the son of Isaac E. and Rebecca (Jones) Isaacs. He attended rural country schools, Iowa City, City High School and the State University of Iowa where he received a B.A. in Economics. In high school and college he was a member of the cross country track teams, while at City High in 1930, he set the state indoor track meet record for the one mile. Seventy-five years ago he won the Sharon Center Track Meet. On August 25, 1938, Fremont married Gladys Arn at the First English Lutheran Church in Iowa City. He has been a life long farmer on the family farm in West Lucas Township rural Johnson County. Fremont was a pioneer in agriculture. He imported Yorkshire Hogs from Canada, helped to develop hybrid seed Corn and had the first Danish style hog barn in the area. In 1963 he was named “Master Corn Grower” in Iowa. He developed several patents for farm equipment and used a no-till planter starting in 1973. For thirty five years he served as the Secretary Treasurer and Fair Manager of the Johnson County Fair. His community involvement included the Johnson County Pork and Beef Producers, the Iowa Turkey Federation, Project Green, a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, Johnson County Conservation Board, Heritage Trust, Farm Bureau and Junior Farm Bureau, Iowa State Fair Board Association, Iowa Farm Family, past board member of the West Lucas School District, former council member of the First English - Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. For Seventy years from 1932 until 2002 he served as the West Lucas Township Clerk. He was a strong supporter of the Johnson County Fire Departments and First Responders Organizations. The Hills Fire Department and Hills First Responders were benefactors of his hard work and dedication as a trustee. Fremont’s family will remember his love of farming, hard work and his willingness to help anyone in need. They will miss his ever present smile and his ability to communicate with only the use of his eyebrows. He refused to stay indoors and was happiest riding in the pickup with his son John, checking on the farm and his family. His family includes a son: John (Pat) Isaacs of Iowa City; daughter, Ruth (Steven) Studt of Minneapolis, Minnesota; grandchildren, John Henry (Jesse) Isaacs, Thomas (Lynné) Isaacs, Charles Isaacs (fiancée Bryanna) all of Iowa City, Mark (Wendy) Studt of Montana, Karl (Becky) Studt of Minneapolis; great grandchildren, Dalton and Austyn Isaacs of Iowa City, Gabriel Studt and Doug Rossberg of Montana; sister, Martha Ann Paver of Salt Lake City, Utah; sisters in-law, Geraldine Arn of Georgetown, Texas and Louise Jones of Detroit, Michigan; local nieces and nephew, Nancy McGrane, Sharon Nash, Holly Wellendorf, Sally Gaffey and Robert Arn; local cousins, Mary Ellen Clark and Gloria Dunlap. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Gladys in 2000; sister, Mary Remley; brothers in-law, Don Arn and Bob Arn, Kennard Jones and John Paver; sisters in-law, Esther Arn and Dorothy Arn.
