Obituary of Nellie M. Hughes

Nellie M. Hughes, age 91, of Iowa City died following a short illness on Sunday, December 19, 2004 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Memorials may be given to the Nellie Hughes memorial fund. Online condolences may be sent for family through our website@www.gayandciha.com. Nellie Marie Schooley was born on March 19, 1913 in Iowa City the daughter of Carl and Georgianna Conklin Schooley. She graduated from West Liberty High School and the Irish Business College in Iowa City. She met Paul J. Hughes while attending school in Iowa City and they were married on September 16, 1937 at the Little Welsh Church. Nellie worked at the West Liberty State Bank until after her marriage. The couple resided in Iowa City for six years and then moved to West Liberty where the lived until 1958, they returned to Iowa where she has been a resident for the last 46 years. Nellie was a member of the West Liberty Methodist Church, the Iowa City Women’s Club and was a long time volunteer at the Iowa City Senior Center. Nellie had many talents including, embroidery, crocheting, wheat and bead weaving and sewing. Her family will always remember a loving mother, wife and grandmother who loved her grandsons and spending time with her daughter. She will be missed by her family and friends including her Friday morning Panera's Coffee Club. Her family includes her daughter, Brenda and husband, James Schintler of Iowa City, grandsons, Phillip and wife, Michele Schintler of rural Kalona, Peter and wife, Henriett Schintler of Puerto Rico, great-grandsons, Barry and Heath Schintler of rural Kalona, brothers in-law, Dale Hughes and Wayne Schrum of Iowa City, sister in-law, Dorothy Hughes of Coralville along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Paul in 2001, sister, Louise Voss and a brother in-law, Lester Voss. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Nellie’s family and her services.
