Obituary of Arnold A. Bartels

Arnold A. “Arnie” Bartels, of Iowa City, died Tuesday, July 5, 2005 at Veterans Hospital, Iowa City. Services will be held 7:00 pm, Friday, July 8, 2005 at Gay & Ciha Funeral Home, Iowa City. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Coralville, 10:00 am Saturday, July 9, 2005 with Military Rites by Walter Johnson American Legion Post #721, Coralville. Visitation will be from 5 pm until service time, Friday, July 8, 2005 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in Arnie’s name to the Visiting Nurses or Walter Johnson American Legion Post #721. Online condolences for Arnie’s family may be sent through our website @www.gayandciha.com. Arnie was born December 1, 1922 in Lakefield, Minnesota to William and Louise (Anders) Bartels. He married Norma Jean Prather, July 28, 1946 in Spencer, Iowa. Arnie was a US Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a Chief Petty Officer with the LSM 420. He worked Earl Yoder Construction for 20 years before starting Bartels and Sons Construction in 1978 where he worked until his retirement. Arnie was a 50 year member of Walter Johnson American Legion Post #721, Coralville, Clarksville Masonic Lodge, Coralville, KAABA Shrine, Iowa City Eagles Club, and a former member of the Coralville City Council. Arnie’s interests were hunting, fishing, bowling, coin collecting, playing cards and reunions with former members of LSM 420. Arnie was kind and loving husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by all. Arnie’s family includes his wife, Norma, a daughter, Barbara and husband, Doug Olson of North Liberty, 3 sons, Max of Iowa City, Scott and wife, Mia of Coralville and Steve and wife, Judi of North Liberty, 8 grandchildren, Michelle, Max, Amy, Michael, Amanda, Cody, Kasie and Mitchell, 4 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 6 sisters and 4 brothers. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Arnold’s family and his services.
