Nora, or as I knew her, Aunty Gabi, was only 10 years older than me. She loved looking after me when I was a baby and small child. Sadly, in 1956, when Gabi and family managed to leave Hungary, although I was supposed to leave with them, I stayed behind.
Life is full of what if's, but I know that if I could have left with my paternal grandparents, my life would have been so so different and I would have lived in Canada and been able to spend much more time with my dad.
But alas, life throws challenges, some good, some bad and I only mananged to meet up with Gabi and her family just once, in the 90's when my mother and I flew over to meet them all.
Sadly we lost contact again and I only found out recently, after my mothers death in April that Gabi had too passed away and that my dad died some time before that.
Gabi was very kind to me and showed me pictures and told me stories of my grandparents. She also showed me her lovely home and cooked mother and me some very tasty meals.
God bless Gabi and your family. May you rest in peace now, with your brother who was my dad, and parents.
