Obituary of Lorence M. Fuhrmeister

Lorence M. Fuhrmeister, age 88 of rural North Liberty, died Thursday, November 18, 2004 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a short illness. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 22, 2004 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Karl Divine-Koch officiating. Family graveside services will take place at the Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty. Visitation will be from 2 to 4pm Sunday at the funeral home. Lorence Moreland Fuhrmeister was born January 14, 1916 in rural North Liberty the son of Jesse and Nellie (Moreland) Fuhrmeister. He graduated from University High School in Iowa City in 1934 and went on to attend the State University of Iowa for two years. On May 26, 1941, he married Florence Mary Martin. Following their marriage, the couple farmed northwest of North Liberty until their retirement. He also was an independent Insurance Agent representing a several companies for a number of years. Lorence was one of the founding members of the North Liberty Optimist Club, being its first president, and for many years enjoyed the game of golf. His family includes his wife of sixty-three years, Florence; daughter, Christine Christian and her husband, Roger of Iowa City; son Eric Fuhrmeister of Coralville; two grandchildren, Sarah Christian Baxter and her husband, Sidney of San Francisco, CA and David Christian of Iowa City; one sister, Rose Mary Pendergast of Seattle, WA, and one brother, Paul Fuhrmeister and his wife, Virginia of Williamsburg, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lida Brender. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Lorence’s family and his services.
