Obituary of Glenn E. Roberts

Glenn E. Roberts age 84 of Iowa City died on Sunday, May 9, 2004, at his home in Iowa City. Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, 2004 at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Private family burial services will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery on Monday. Visitation will be on Saturday from 1:00 until service time at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Hospice of Iowa City. Online condolences may be sent for Glenn’s family through our website @www.gayandciha.com. Glenn Everett Roberts was born on December 11, 1919, in Redline, Iowa the son of William and Elsina Roberts. He attended schools in Harlan, Iowa graduating from Harlan High School. Following graduation he worked for Western Engineering. During WWII Glenn served his county in the Army Air Corps. Glenn married Cecile Carl in Pasadena, California on December 5, 1942; they had been married for over fifty six years before Cecile death in 1988. Together they moved to Iowa City where he attended the University of Iowa. Following his graduation he purchased Varsity Cleaners which he owned until his retirement. Glenn and Cecile loved sports especially Iowa Football, together they missed only a few games. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards and his family and friends. Glenn was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ and a life time member of the Elks Club in Iowa City. The Elks was a favorite place to play cards and meet his friends. As a way to give back to his community Glenn served on the Iowa City, City Council and organized the Glenn Roberts Hospice Golf Tournament held each August at the Elks Golf Course. His family includes three sons, William Roberts and wife, Shirley of Iowa City, Mike Roberts of Coral Springs, Florida and Tom Roberts and wife, Vicki of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and four step-grandchildren along with many special friends. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1998, two sisters and one brother.
