Obituary of George V. Neitderhisar

George V. Neitderhisar, 83, of rural Tiffin, died Saturday, April 30, 2005 at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held 10:30am Thursday, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Iowa City. Sunday parking ordinance will be in effect during the service on Dubuque and Jefferson Streets. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Wednesday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City. George was born November 28, 1921 in Madison Township, Johnson County to John and Ella (Fuhrmeister) Neitderhisar. He was a graduate of University High School, Iowa City. George served in the US Army’s Third Armored Division during WWII. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal and P.O.W. Medal. On April 23, 1947 he married Rita Woods at First English Lutheran Church, Iowa City. George was a retired farmer and a lifelong resident of the Tiffin area. In 1995 George was honored by the US Army Corps of Engineers by having his name placed on the Veterans Trail at Coralville Lake. George was member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, the Solon American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, North Liberty Optimists and the I-Club. George had been a South Slope Board member and a township clerk for Madison Township. George enjoyed both the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye Football. In fact his watching of Iowa Football started in high school and continued until today being only interrupted by his service to country during WWII and his time of healing following. But it was his family that was his great love. George’s family includes his wife, Rita, a daughter, Linda McAdam of Cedar Rapids, a granddaughter, Cindy and her husband, Mike Ernst of Minneapolis, Minnesota, a grandson, Ryan McAdam and his wife, Sarah of Cedar Rapids, five great-grandchildren, Morgan and Emma Ernst, and Hunter, Gavin and Tiernan McAdam, a sister-in-law, Sylvia Neitderhisar of Tiffin, and numerous nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Oren and Harvey. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City is caring for George’s family and his services.
