Obituary of Norine E. Canney

Norine E. Canney, age 76 of 3032 Wayne Avenue, Iowa City died suddenly and unexpectedly Monday, February 21, 2005 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 24, 2005, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Robert Gebel officiating. Burial will be at the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Wednesday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Norine Elizabeth Schirm Canney was born December 28, 1928, in rural Benton County, near Newhall, Iowa the daughter of Otto and Maria (Ernst) Schirm. She graduated from Newhall High School in 1946. On June 19, 1949, she married Robert L. “Bob” Canney at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. The couple for many years lived in Newhall where they owned and operated the Newhall Locker Plant from 1954 until 1965. In 1966, they established Shamrock Construction Company, which they continued to operate. They moved their business and residence to Iowa City in 1972. Norine continued to run the family business after her husband’s death in August of 2002 until retiring and selling the business in March of 2003. She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, an avid sports fan, and a lifelong partner with her husband, Bob both in business and in their lives. Her family and their business were the most important aspects of her life. Her family includes a son and his wife, Michael and Anita Canney of Des Moines; daughter, Patricia Canney of Fairfax; five grandchildren, Aaron, Ashley and Austin Canney; Nicole and her husband, Jeff Williamson, and Kristin and her husband, Aaron Meyer; one brother, Glenn Schirm of Vinton, Iowa. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Norine’s family and her services.
