Obituary of Mae T. Ewalt

Mae Ewalt, 97, of 521 5th Avenue, Coralville died suddenly Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa. Services will be held 11 am Saturday, March 26, 2005 at the Coralville United Methodist Church, Coralville, Iowa with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Coralville, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Friday at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City. Memorials may be made to the Coralville United Methodist Church or to the Coralville Recreation Department for the M. A. Ewalt Park. Online condolences may be sent for Mae’s family through our website @www.gayandciha.com. Mae was born July 24, 1907 in Greenville, Tennessee to William R. and Alvette (Mabe) Kelley. She graduated from the Oxford High School, Oxford, Iowa. She married Merritt A. Ewalt on August 3, 1929 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was a lab technician for the Pathology Department at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Mae was a long time resident of Coralville, living there for more than 75 years. Mae was a charter member of the Coralville United Methodist Church and a 50 year member of the Whip-Poor-Will Club, although she was currently inactive. Mae enjoyed cooking (she’d tell you she made the most delicious pies), gardening, canning (her goal was 1000 jars a season) and quilting (every family member had one). She told all that she worked hard and she would never lie down. Mae’s family includes 3 sons, Merritt and his wife, Mareda of Storm Lake, Iowa, Robert and his wife, Diane of Mansfield, Texas and Ralph of Tipton, 2 daughters, Margaret Crowley and her husband, Gary of West Liberty and Marilyn Andrews of Coralville, 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 4 great great-grandchildren She was preceded by her husband, parents, 4 sisters and 2 brothers.
