Louis Voparil, age 81, of, Iowa City died surrounded by his family on October 16, 2004 at Iowa City Rehabilitation & Health Care Center following a long illness Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial with military rites will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a rosary at 8:00 p.m. at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Iowa City Hospice. Online condolences may be sent for family through our website @ www.gayandciha.com. Louis Voparil was born on May 26, 1923 in Cheska Rybna, Czechoslovakia the son of John and Frances Drahos Voparil. As an infant his family moved to Iowa City. Louie attended Iowa City Schools and served his country in the United States Army during WWII. On April 12, 1942, he married Virginia Gartzke in Kahoka, Missouri. For many years he was a self employed housing contractor in Iowa City. Following his career as a contractor he and Virginia owed and operated “Grandpa’s Grocery” in Tiffin. Louie was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City, the Oxford American Legion and the Roy L. Chopek, American Legion Post in Iowa City. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus. Louie was very proud of his family and his Czech heritage. He will be remembered as a hard working honest man who wasn’t afraid to say what he thought. He always did things on his own terms. His family includes his wife, Virginia of Iowa City, three children, Terry Voparil and wife, Julie of Iowa City, Sandra and husband Jim Farnsworth of MacGregor, Rick Voparil and wife Dawn of West Liberty, eleven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews. Louie was preceded in death by his parents, two half brothers, Edward and Johnny, one half sister, Elsie Carver and one great grandson.
