Obituary of Fred W. Finley

Fred W. Finley, age 82 of Iowa City has reunited with his twelve brothers and sisters, his parents, and our Lord Savior. He died Sunday, November 13, 2005, at his home from lung cancer. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 16, 2005, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend Karen Nelson officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Fred’s memory. Online condolences may be sent for his family through our website @www.gayandciha.com. Fred Wayne Finley was born January 9, 1923, in Conesville, Iowa the son of Fred and Esther (Wesson) Finley. Following graduation from high school Fred enlisted in the United States Army during WWII serving in the European Theater from 1943 to 1945. On November 7, 1945, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa he married Charlotte E. Stineman of Grandview, Iowa. For over twenty years, Fred worked for DX Oil Company, and later owned and operated his own trucking company, “Finley Trucking”. Fred was a fifty-three year member of the Walter Johnson Post #721 of the Coralville American Legion. He was an avid reader, enjoyed woodworking and doing upholstery work. Last week on Monday, November 7th, Fred and Charlotte celebrated sixty-years of marriage. In addition to Charlotte, Fred’s family includes their children, Linda Carmichael and her husband, Jim of Hills, Lori Escher and her husband, Jim of Kalona, Tom Finley of Riverside, and Tracy Finley and his wife, Julie of Iowa City; grandchildren, Genny Gunn and her husband, Tony, Bret Bigley and his wife, Heather, Luke Finley and his wife, Hillary, Beau Finley, Josh Escher, Katelyn Escher and Miranda Finley; six great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and seven step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters, Ruby Duscombe, Ellen Finley, Vera Morgan, Pearle Gordy, and Lilly Finley; seven brothers, Clarence, Merle, Robert, Harold, Ralph, Ben and Don. Fred lives on in our hearts. We love him and will miss him until we meet again. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Fred’s family and his services.
