Obituary of Kenneth A. Mulford

Kenneth Allen Mulford, longtime Iowa City businessman died Wednesday, November 9, 2005, of heart failure at his home surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 12, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Paul Akin officiating. (Sunday parking ordinance will be in effect for parking on the streets near the church). Entombment will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 pm today at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Ken’s memory to Iowa City Hospice or First United Methodist Church Men’s Group. Online condolences may be sent for his family through our website @www.gayandciha.com. Ken was born March 17, 1925 in Iowa City, the son of Allen and Violet (Cross) Mulford. He graduated from North High School in Des Moines, and attended the University of Iowa earning a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1949. He served his country during World War II aboard the aircraft carrier Saginaw Bay CVE-82 for the United States Navy as a 1st Class Petty Officer. He worked for Iowa–Illinois Gas and Electric Company (now MidAmerican Energy). In 1950 he joined his father in the family business, Mulford Plumbing and Heating until his retirement. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for over fifty years, former member of the Iowa City Chamber of Commerce, life member of the Elks BPOE #590, lifetime member of the University of Iowa Alumni Association, past member of the University of Iowa Marching and Concert Band. He was a member of the American Legion, Iowa City Home Builders Association, Master Builders of Iowa, had served ten years on the Iowa City Planning and Zoning Commission, and the Iowa City Plumbing Board. His family includes his wife, Bernie; children, Sue Schroeder and her husband, Gene of Bennett, IA; Jan Wilson and her husband, Gary of Clarendon Hills, IL; and Jim Mulford and his wife, Kellie of Iowa City, IA. Grandchildren are Eric, Megan and Trent Schroeder; Hillary Biancuzzo, Lindsay Schaefer, Matt, Amy and Evan Wilson; Justin and Tyler Mulford; and two great-grandchildren, Nicholas Biancuzzo and Wilson Herschman. Sisters-in-law, Twyla Brown of Ft. Smith, AK, and Bea Mulford of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Nephews and Nieces; Val Porter, Brian and Craig Brown, Tracy Mulford and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Keith Mulford. Ken cherished his family, golfing buddies, coffee group at Village Inn, bowling leagues and his many years in business with his family and friends.
