Obituary of Raymond D. Potratz

Raymond D. Potratz age 82 of 1020 S. Scott Blvd., Iowa City died on Sunday, January 11, 2004 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Iowa City following a brief illness. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 13, 2004 at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial with military rites by the Coralville American Legion with assistance from other local organizations will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Iowa City. Memorials may be given to the Raymond Potratz memorial fund; online condolences may be sent to his family at www.gayandciha.com. Raymond D. Potratz was born on January 23, 1921 in Sumner, Iowa the son of Edwin and Martha (Katz) Potratz. He graduated from Fredericksburg High School and served his country during WWII in the Army. He was married to Joan Gardner for 23 years and to Fern Herdlicka for 27 years. For many years he was the manager of the town and country apartment complex in Iowa City. He was a member of the American Legion Post #17 and the VFW Post # 3949. Ray had a wonderful sense of humor, he never meet a stranger and was willing to help anyone. Ray enjoyed bowling, talking to family and friends, he would on occasion drown a worm in the water in an effort to catch fish. His family includes a son, Brian and wife Rita Potratz of St. Joseph, MO., a daughter, Jean and husband Don Remour of Swisher, stepdaughter, Corine Wardenburg of Williamsburg, stepsons, Ken and his wife Gloria Herdlicka of Iowa City and Gary and wife Ann of South Carolina, one brother, Donald and wife Lorna Potratz of Charles City, IA., 12 grandchildren and 2 great granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, a stepson Les, his wife Fern, a brother Rueben and a sister Maxine. The Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service are caring for Ray’s service and his family.
