Obituary of Donald W. Hogan

Donald W. Hogan age 74 of 1713 Flatiron Drive, Iowa City, died on Sunday, May 23, 2004 at his home following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 at Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial with Military Honors will be at Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City. Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Iowa City Hospice, online condolences may be sent for family through our website @ www.gayandciha.com. Donald W. Hogan was born on June 6, 1929 in Johnson County the son of Everett D. and Emma “Irene” Sorensen Hogan. He attended Iowa City Schools and during World War II served his country in the United States Navy. After the service he returned to Iowa City and worked at Nall Motors. Don married Verlee Buline on July 7, 1947 in Iowa City. He received his Law Enforcement Degree from the University of Iowa and the University of Texas along with attending the FBI Training Institute. His professional career was spent in law enforcement. From 1962 until 1976 he was a member of the Iowa City Police Department; from 1976 until 1979 he served as the Chief of Police for the City of Muscatine and from 1979 until 1991 as the head of Public Safety at the University of Iowa. Don enjoyed photography, fishing and golfing with his buddies at Fairview Golf Course. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His family includes his wife: Verlee of Iowa City, two sons, Wayne and his wife, Colleen Hogan, of Iowa City, and Mark and his wife, Krista Hogan, of Bridgewater, VA, grandchildren, Grant Hogan, Suzanne Oglesby, Emma Hogan and Mara Hogan, one sister, Patricia and her husband, Marvin Schuessler, Iowa City, one aunt, Bernice and her husband, John Greiner of Minden, Iowa, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Wendell, Darrel, Michael “Mickey” and one sister, Shirley Hofman. Don’s family would like to thank the care givers at Iowa City Hospice for their compassion and support. Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Donald’s family and his services.
