Obituary of Lester P. Harris

Lester P Harris age 80 of 1170 E. Jefferson Street, Iowa City, died following an extended illness on Saturday, February 28, 2004 at Lantern Park Nursing and Rehabilitation in Coralville. Funeral services will at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 3, 2004 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Iowa City. For those attending the service, parking will be available on Dubuque, Jefferson and Market Streets. At Les’s request no visitation will be held. Private family burial services will be held at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Hospice of Iowa City or to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Online condolences may be sent to his family at www.gayandciha.com. Lester Paul Harris was born on May 22, 1923, in Iowa City the son of Joseph and Pearl Fellers Harris. He attended Iowa City Schools and married Shirley Miller on April 24, 1943 in Iowa City. Les worked for the University of Iowa in the paint shop. During his career with the University he was often asked to oversee the painting of many special projects and buildings. He took great pride in his work and was meticulous in what he did. Les was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, a sponsor of the Lutheran League, a Boy Scout leader and a past member of the Izaak Walton League. He enjoyed traveling, the great outdoors, square dancing, bowling and was known for his dry sense of humor. His family includes his wife Shirley of Iowa City, one daughter, Dawn and husband Joe Rogers of Iowa City, five grandchildren, David Verry of Iowa City, Randy Rogers of Des Moines, Denny and wife Jackie Verry of Iowa City, Tami and husband Kevin LeGrand of Peru, Illinois, Tony and wife Dawn Boldt of Des Moines, seven great-grandchildren Miranda, Mikael, McKenzee, Ceanna, Kyle, Payton and Kylie, one brother, Leslie and wife Edna Harris of Grants Pass, Oregon, one sister in-law, Ella Mae Harris of Iowa City along with several loving nieces and nephews,.
