Obituary of Bernard I. Aldeman

Bernard I. Aldeman, age 81 of 3322 Hanover Court, Iowa City died Wednesday, October 5, 2005, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 8, 2005, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Iowa City with the Reverend Karl Divine-Koch officiating. (Sunday parking ordinance will be in effect for those parking near the church) Burial with military honors provided by the West Branch American Legion at the West Branch Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Friday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Memorial donations can be made in Bernard’s memory to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church or Iowa City Hospice. Online condolences may be sent for his family through our website @www.gayandciha.com. Bernard was born February 27, 1924, in West Branch, Iowa the son of Harold and Marie (White) Aldeman. Following graduation from West Branch High School in 1941, he attended Iowa State University. During WWII, he served his country in the 99th Infantry Division of the United States Army, having served in the Battle of the Bulge. During his service he was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received in combat. On May 24, 1944, he was united in marriage to Thelma Jensen in West Branch. The couple has lived in the West Branch and Iowa City areas all their lives. For many years Bernard worked as business manager in the College of Dentistry at the University of Iowa. He was an active member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, former member of Noon Lions Club in Iowa City, of the West Branch American Legion, Hy-Vee Coffee Club, and many hours as a volunteer for Mercy Hospital. His family includes his wife, Thelma; their children, Jerry Aldeman of Coralville; Mary Franck and her husband, Lee of Foley, Alabama; Jim Aldeman and his wife, Barb of Schaumburg, Illinois; Ed Aldeman and his wife, Denise of Iowa City; and Steve Aldeman of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, Lee Franck and his wife, Sheila, Don Franck and his wife, Christi, Megan Franck, Bill Henss, Matt Aldeman and his wife, Amy, Chad Aldeman, Mark Aldeman, Michael Aldeman, and David Aldeman; great-grandchildren, Lauryn, Lane, Jordyn, Logan, and Gavin. He was preceded in death by his parents. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Bernard’s family and his services.
