Obituary of Earl W. Grizel

Earl W. Grizel, age 87 formerly of 5355 Elmira Road, Iowa City died Tuesday, March 8, 2005 at the Lone Tree Care Center following an extended illness. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 11, 2005 at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa City. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm. Thursday at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Earl was born May 23, 1917 in Iowa City the son of Frank and Emma (Kadera) Grizel. He was a graduate of West Branch High School. Earl married Alice Schump in 1944 in Iowa City, she died in May 1956. On December 2, 1960 he married Jeanne Jones in Preston, Minnesota. Earl was lifelong farmer in the Downy area of Johnson County. In 1940 he began farming the family farm with his mother following the death of his father. In May of 1962 he and Jeanne moved to farm on Elmira Road. Earl was a member of the Iowa City Moose Lodge and enjoyed hunting, fishing, pitching horseshoes and card playing at the elevator and general store in Oasis. Other interests were the stock car races at Tipton and West Liberty and listening to Chicago Cubs baseball on the radio. Earl’s family includes his wife, Jeanne, two daughters, Sue and husband, Richard Sedlacek and Emy Lou and husband, Joe Weldon, all of Iowa City, a son, Frank of North Liberty. Six grandchildren, Lucy Cole and special friend Roger Fincher, Carolyn and husband, Glen Van Dell and Ed Shaw and wife, Misty all of Iowa City, Theresa and husband, Darren Fetters of North Liberty, Melissa Powers of Williamsburg and Michael Goodman of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Earl’s family also includes 13 great-grandchildren. Earl was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Leo, and a daughter-in-law, Ruth.
