Obituary of Genevieve J. Thompson

Genevieve J. “Gen” Thompson, age 82 formerly of Iowa City and Coralville died Sunday, February 19, 2006, at the Crestview Care Center in West Branch. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, February 23, 2006, at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Iowa City, with the Reverend Kyle Otterbein officiating. Burial will be at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville. Visitation will be from 5 to 7pm Wednesday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in her memory to the Iowa City Animal Shelter. Online condolences may be sent to for Genevieve’s family through our website @www.gayandciha. Genevieve J. (Horsford) Thompson was born May 12, 1923 in Montezuma, Iowa the daughter of Forrest and Clara (Johnston) Horsford. She graduated from Montezuma High School, went on to graduate Cum Laude from Ripon College in Wisconsin, and did her graduate work at the University of Iowa. She married Dr. John R. Thompson August 12, 1950, in Montezuma. Prior to her marriage she worked at Cunard White Star – Detroit Edison Company, in Detroit, MI. After her marriage she taught school in Montezuma for a number of years, and after moving to Iowa City she worked in the office of the Dean of the College of Business, and later in the Registrar’s office. She was an active member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church having served as an deacon; she volunteered many hours at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics; a member of Phi Delta Epsilon Honorary Journalism Fraternity and Delta Phi Sigma Sorority both at Ripon College; P.E.O. Chapter H.I; University of Iowa Alumni Association, lifetime member of the College of Education; and member of University of Iowa Dental Wives. Her family includes her children; son, Dr. Bart Thompson and Robin of Iowa City; son, Brad Thompson and Meg of Iowa City; and daughter, Shelly Thompson of West Des Moines and Jim Becker of Des Moines; and a sister-in-law, Charlotte Fulghum and her husband, Bill of Mason City, Iowa. Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, and a brother, Howard Horsford. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Genevieve’s family and her services.
