Obituary of Dean A. Yanausch

Dean A. “Deano” Yanausch, age 80, of 21 Expo Dr., Iowa City, died on Friday, November 5, 2004 at Iowa City Rehabilitation & Health Care Center following a lengthy illness with cancer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, November 9, 2004 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City. Visitation will be on Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Memorials may be given to the Dean Yanausch Memorial Fund. Online condolences may be sent for family through our website @ www.gayandciha.com. Dean Andrew Yanausch was born on February 8, 1924 in rural Johnson County, Iowa, the son of Lawrence A. and Jessie B. Hammer Yanausch. He graduated from Iowa City, City High School and attended the University of Iowa. For many years he worked at Oral B Labs in Iowa City as a Machinist. On February 24, 1968 he married Kathleen Gerlits Zeman in Rock Island. Following his retirement in 1987 he worked at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City. His hobbies and interests included, golfing, fishing, bowling, spending time working on his garden and lawn. During his high school years he played on the City High School football team where he won many awards. He never lost the love for sports, especially football. Dean was a fan of high school, college and professional football teams. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. His family includes, his wife, Katie of Iowa City, son, Larry Yanausch of Hills, brother, Jack and his wife, Virginia Yanausch of Iowa City, step-daughter, Shirley Barkalow of Iowa City, step-daughter in-law, Lois Zeman of Hills, five step-grandchildren, eleven step-great grandchildren. His parents, daughter, Sandra and a stepson, Frank Zeman preceded him in death. Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Dean’s family and his services.
