Obituary of Gordon W. Hill, Jr.

Gordon W. Hill Jr., age 91 of Bettendorf died Wednesday, March 15, 2006. at the Solon Nursing Care Center in Solon, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 17, 2006, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with Iowa City Hospice Chaplin Mary Johnston officiating. Burial will be at the Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2pm until services Friday at the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made in Gordon’s memory to Iowa City Hospice. Gordon was born November 16, 1914, in Bettendorf, Iowa the son of Gordon W, Hill Sr. and Alice (Strickland) Hill. He attended Davenport schools, graduating from Davenport High School. On October 17, 1944, he married Marjorie “Midge” Williams in Davenport. Gordon was associated with Eagle Food Center in Milan, IL for many years retiring in 1979. The couple lived in the Davenport and Bettendorf until moving to Iowa City in 1991 to be closer to family. Midge died December 14, 1995. His family includes two daughters and their husbands, Marilyn and Eldon “Al” Podratz of Renton, WA; and Cynthia and Frank Usher of Iowa City; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Midge; son, Gordon W. Hill III; daughter, Susan Elizabeth Hill; one sister, Betty Hill; and two brothers, Hugh and George Hill.
