Obituary of Wilbur Wray Young

Wilbur Wray Young, 76 of North Liberty, Iowa died Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a sudden illness. A celebration of Wilbur’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 8, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church in North Liberty with the Reverend Alicia Williams officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be held at the Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Friday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. A memorial fund has been established in Wilbur’s memory. Online condolences may be sent for his family through our website @www.gayandciha.com. Wilbur was born January 1, 1930, at the home of his parents W.A. and Sarah (Hastings) Young. He graduated from Iowa City City High School in 1948 and from Iowa State University in 1952 with his B.A. in Agriculture. He was also a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. During the Korean Conflict Wilbur served in the First Calvary Division of the United States Army. On September 5, 1954, he married Charlotte Strothman of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. They celebrated their 50th. Wedding Anniversary in 2004. He has served on the South Slope Telephone Board, the Consumer’s Cooperative Board, was a Past President of the North Liberty Optimist Club, a past DeKalb Seed Dealer, and a member of the First United Methodist Church in North Liberty. Wilbur was retired farmer and a lifelong resident of the North Liberty Area residing on his family’s century farm. Wilbur was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed. He loved attending his grandchildren’s athletic, music and 4-H events. Wilbur’s family includes his wife, Charlotte; son, Michael Young and his wife, Linda of North Liberty; daughters, Barbara Meade of Iowa City and Kay Mohling and her husband, Gene of North Liberty; grandchildren, Justin Young, Brandon Young, Rachel Meade, Katherine Mohling, Caroline Mohling, and Nicholas Mohling; brothers, Richard Young and his wife, Grace of North Liberty, Robert Young and his wife, Marge of Cedar Rapids, and Bruce Young and his wife, Marge of Shelton, WA; sister-in-law, Louise Young of Iowa City; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Culver Young. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Wilbur’s family and his services.
