Obituary of Emma Pecina

Emma V. Pecina, age 94 of 731 Dearborn Street, Iowa City died at her home Wednesday, August 23, 2006. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 2, 2006, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend William Harnish officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be on Saturday prior to the services. A memorial fund has been established in Emma’s memory. Emma Valentine Hartl Pecina was born February 14, 1912 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the daughter of Josef and Emma (Kuncl) Hartl. She attended school in Cedar Rapids graduating from Grant High School. On September 13, 1932 she married Milo Stanley Pecina in Cedar Rapids. The couple moved to Iowa City in 1936 where for over twenty-eight years they owned and operated Pecina’s Market first downtown on College Street and later on Iowa Avenue. They both worked long and hard hours in the stores, and they did it together. Emma was a member of Carnation Rebekah Lodge #376 in Iowa City and also an active volunteer at the Iowa City Senior Center since 1992. Her family includes her, husband, Milo; daughter-in-law, Joan Pecina of Waukegan, IL; grandchildren, Julie Ahern and her husband, Craig of Waukegan, IL, Kristin Nielsen and her husband, Mark of Roundlake Beach, IL, and Dr. Jennifer Pecina of Rochester, MN; great-grandchildren, Milo Nielsen, Sydney Nielsen, Emma Ahern, and Sophie Ahern; and a sister-in-law, Bessie Vesecky of Key Largo, FL. Emma was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Roberta Pecina in 1990 and a son, Richard Pecina in 1995. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Emma’s family and her services.
