Obituary of Eileen K. Herring
Eileen K. Herring, lifelong resident of Iowa City, died Saturday, July 12th at home with her husband, Jack, son, Dave and daughter, Annette, days after celebrating her 71st birthday; after a long, determined and valiant battle with cancer.
A gathering for family and friends will be held from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, July 15th at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Memorials in Eileen's name can be made to Iowa City Hospice or the Iowa City Public Library (Friends Foundation).
Eileen K. Griffin was born July 8, 1943, in Iowa City; daughter of John E. and Margaret (Melicker) Griffin. She graduated from Regina High School and later attended the Iowa City Commercial College. On April 20, 1963, she married John H. "Jack" Herring, at St. Mary's in Iowa City. She worked for many years at the Leff Law Firm, retiring in 1999, so that she and Jack could travel more, attend events of their grandchildren, both locally and out east, and cheer on the Hawkeyes and Cubs.
Her family includes her husband, Jack; children, Annette M. Herring of Iowa City and David E. Herring (Lori) of Shrewsbury, MA; grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah and Meghan Maynard and Taylor and Kelsey Herring; siblings, Midge VeDepo (John), Doris Kavalauskas (Peter), Ron Griffin and Dennis Griffin (Fran) and sisters-in-law, Beth Griffin and Barbara Hunter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Rick, in 1982; and brothers, Ken and John Griffin.
