Obituary of William A. Vorbrich

William A. Vorbrich, age 79 of 4030 Stewart Road NE, Iowa City died peacefully at his home Sunday, October 29, 2006. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 2, 2006, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City with the Reverend David Schuldt officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be held at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Bill’s memory to the Iowa Fireman’s Memorial in Coralville. Online condolences may be sent for his family through our website @www.gayandciha.com. William August Vorbrich was born April 23, 1927, in Iowa City the son of William and Anna Vorbrich. He graduated from Iowa City City High School in 1945, and had attended the University of Iowa. During World War II he served his country in the United States Army being stationed in Germany. On July 18, 1948, Bill married Shirley Parker in Iowa City. He worked at Hometown Dairy promoting Redi-Whip before joining the Iowa City Fire Department in 1950 where he worked until 1954. In 1951, Bill joined Sutton Radio & T.V. where he became a partner and general manager. Bill retired from Sutton’s in 1986. In retirement, Bill drove for two local airport shuttles where he enjoyed informing travelers about the Iowa City area. He has been a member of the Iowa State Fireman’s Association since 1950, a member of the Iowa City American Legion Post No. 17, having served as Past Commander in 1955; and a lifetime member of the Iowa City Elks Lodge, No. 590. Bill was a charter member of the Coralville United Methodist Church and Chairman of the Building Committee for their present location at 806 13th Avenue, Coralville. Bill also served with the Coralville Volunteer Fire Department for ten years retiring in 1964 as Assistant Fire Chief. His family includes his wife, Shirley; son, Terry Vorbrich of Des Moines; daughter, Norma Boyd and her husband, James of Minneapolis, MN; five grandchildren, Jason and April Boyd of Minneapolis; Nile, Sadie and Dane Vorbrich of Des Moines; brother and his wife, Lynn and Jody Vorbrich of Johnston, IA; and brothers-in-law, Dan Parker and his wife, Janice of Davenport, and Roger Parker and his wife, Sue of Prescott, AZ; and several beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Dale Vorbrich and his wife, Helen; sister Melba Goddard and her husband, Ivan.
