Obituary of Judith K. Bunger

Judith Kay “Judy” Bunger, age 65 of Burlington, Iowa died Thursday, November 23, 2006, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa, following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 27, 2006, at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Burlington, Iowa with the Reverend Donald Hoornstra officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4:30pm to 7pm Sunday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City and from 9am until services on Monday at the church in Burlington. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Judy’s memory. Online condolences may be sent for her family through our website @www.gayandciha.com. Judith Kay Ward Bunger was born May 30, 1941, in Waverly, Iowa the daughter of William C. and Petronilla (Cavanagh) Ward. Following graduation from high school in Waverly, she attended and received her B.A. and teaching certificate from the University of Northern Iowa in 1963. For a number of years she taught physical education in Davenport, Iowa City, and Carroll, Iowa. On August 18, 1963 she married Darwin Bunger in Waverly, Iowa. After his graduation from law school in 1966, they lived in Carroll, Iowa for 25 years, raising their three children, Chad William, Michele Ann and Jason Ward. She has spent the past 14 years in Burlington, Iowa where she was a member of PEO Chapter, OW, The Ruth Circle at Messiah Lutheran Church in Burlington, and a former member of King’s Daughters. Judy was an oft time hostess for, and great supporter of Iowa Hawkeye Athletics, in particular, Iowa Football. She volunteered her time to her church along with numerous organizations in every community she lived. She loved to travel with Darwin to various places and particularly to Iowa Football games. She enjoyed and cherished her time with her children and especially her grandchildren. Her family includes her husband, Darwin of 43 years; their three children and spouses, Chad and Judi Bunger of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Michele and Dan Sovers of Iowa City, IA, and Jason and Nicole Bunger of Gilbert, AZ; and their five grandchildren, Carissa, August, Jordan, Maxwell, and Hayden. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Petronilla Ward, and her sister, Mary Ann Ward. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Judy’s family and her services.
