Obituary of Donald F. Sehr
Donald F. Sehr, age 79 of 5024 Sharon Center Road, Iowa City, died Thursday, November 23, 2006, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 28, 2006, at the Sharon Center United Methodist Church with the Reverend Doug Cue officiating. Burial will be at the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Sharon Center. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Monday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, and after 9am until services at the church on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Dons memory to Iowa City Boosters Club, Sharon Center United Methodist Church, or St. John Lutheran Cemetery Association. Online condolences may be sent for his family through our website @www.gayandciha.com. Donald F. Sehr was born May 7, 1927, in Iowa City the son of Frank and Florence (Brazzill) Sehr. Don lived on their Century Farm in Sharon Center of his life. He attended Sharon Center High School for three years, before graduating with the class of 1945 from Iowa City City High School. He attended the University of Iowa and played on the freshman/sophomore basketball team. Don was inducted into the City High School Hall of Fame. Don worked as a substitute rural mail carrier and at the railroad express prior to his being employed by the county of Johnson County, which he did for over 29 years. Sixteen of these years he served on the Board of Supervisors, and as a member served on many state-wide committees. He was past president of the 6th. District Iowa State Association of Counties. Don enjoyed playing amateur baseball, softball, and basketball. He was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the 1952 Iowa AAU Tournament and was inducted into the AAU Hall of Fame. Don was a member of the Iowa High School Athletic Association, officiating high school sports for a number of years. He enjoyed following the Iowa Hawkeyes, and the St. Louis Cardinals, and playing cards with his friends. Don and Anita enjoyed traveling, especially cruises. He was a member of the Johnson County Farm Bureau. On February 13, 1954, He was united in marriage to Anita Schmidtke. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 53 years, son, Jerry Sehr and his wife, Kristen; and grandchildren, Kelsey, Nicholas, Kate, and Jordan, as well as his sister, Colleen Sehr of Iowa City. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, and brother. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his mother in 1939 and his father in 1970.
