Obituary of Arnold G. Baumgartner

Arnold G. Baumgartner, 66 of 1612 Spruce Court, Iowa City died Monday, December 4, 2006, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from complications of emphysema. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 7, 2006, at Grace United Methodist Church in Tiffin with the Reverend Beverly Marshall-Goodell officiating. Burial will be at South Amana Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Wednesday at the Grace United Methodist Church. A memorial fund has been established in Arnold’s memory. Arnold Glen Baumgartner was born December 6, 1939, in South Amana, Iowa the son of Henry and Wilhelmine (Zimmerman) Baumgartner. Following graduation from Amana High School in 1957, he enlisted in the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany. On June 28, 1969, Arnold married Joanne Stiffler in Monticello, Iowa. For many years the couple lived in the Oxford area, until moving to Iowa City five years ago. Arnold was an employee of the United State Postal Service from 1969 until his retirement in 1992 from the Cedar Rapids Office. In his youth Arnold was an Eagle Scout, later serving as a scout master. Both of his sons also became Eagle Scouts. He enjoyed everything there was about trains, loved to travel, and shared his faith with all those around him. Arnold was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He was an animal lover, enjoyed his many friends, and was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. His family includes his wife, Joanne; sons, Eric Baumgartner and his wife, Stephanie of Williamsburg, and Kevin Baumgartner of Iowa City; granddaughter, Samantha Baumgartner of Williamsburg; brother, Mervin Baumgartner and his wife, Carmen of Marion, IA; sister, Anna Marie Kephart and her husband, Harold of South Amana; and a sister-in-law, Mary Baumgartner of South Amana. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Fred Baumgartner; and two brothers in infancy. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service of Iowa City is caring for Arnold’s family and his services.
