Obituary of Fern E. Hunzinger
Fern Edna Hunzinger, age 102 of the Winslow House in Marion, formerly of Iowa City died Saturday, December 9, 2006, at the Winslow House. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, December 15, 2006, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7pm Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in her memory to Hospice of Mercy in Cedar Rapids or Iowa City Hospice. Fern Edna Rummells Hunzinger was born November 19, 1904, in Downey, Iowa the daughter of William H. and Mabel (Endsley) Rummells. She was united in marriage to Lawrence Hunzinger in 1922. Lawrence died in April of 1955. For a number of years she worked in food service at the University of Iowa retiring in 1970. She had been a longtime resident of Iowa City until moving to Cedar Rapids in 1999 to be closer to her daughter and family there. Her family includes her daughter, Janet Duncan and her husband, Carroll of Cedar Rapids, nine grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Mervin Rummells of Cedar Rapids, Philip Rummells of Cedar Rapids, and Gene Rummells and his wife, Faye of Evening Shade, Arkansas; sisters, Ruth Slach of Marion, and Shirley Mathes of Bellingham, WA; sister-in-law, Kathryn Rummells of Mt. Vernon; and numerous nieces and nephews including Joan Cole and Wanda Drake both of Iowa City. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son and his wife, William "Red" and Gloria Hunzinger; sisters, Gladys Glaspey and Faye Hurt; brothers, Donald and Harold Rummells.
