Obituary of John Paul Long
Dr. John Paul Long, Professor Emeritus in Pharmacology at the University of Iowa died at his Oaknoll home Sunday, June 10, 2007, at the age of 80. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday at First Christian Church in Iowa City. Immediately following the services everyone is welcome to join the family for a reception to be held at the church. Private burial services will take place at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 6pm Tuesday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Memorial donations can be made in Pauls memory to the First Christian Church. Online condolences may be sent for his family through the web@www.gayandciha.com John Paul Long was born October 4, 1926, in Albia, Iowa the son of John Edward and Bessie May (Oswandal) Long. Following graduation from Bloomfield High School he served in the United States Army during WW II from 1944 to 1946. He was stationed in Hawaii. John Paul graduated from the University of Iowa in 1954 with a Bachelors Degree, Masters Degree and a Ph.D. On June 11, 1950, he married Marilyn Stookesberry in Ottumwa, Iowa. He was associated with the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Iowa and served as chairman for eleven years. He published over three hundred publications, and received numerous awards including being named as a Roy J. Carver Professor and the Abel Award (American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics). He was honored as the Sophomore Medical Teacher of the year, several years. In 1997 he was named an Emeritus professor at the University. John Paul was a long time member of First Christian Church and held a variety of leadership positions including adult Sunday School teacher. He enjoyed his gardening and giving away his produce. He will be remembered as a man with a great sense of humor. His family includes his wife, Marilyn; three children, Jeffrey Long and his wife, Jody of Gallup, NM; John A. Long and his wife, Sheri Spaine Long of Birmingham, AL; and Jane Peterson and her husband, Steve of West Des Moines, IA; grandchildren, Alicia Bell and her husband, David, Paul Long, Phillip Long, Morgan Long, and John Richard Long, Nicholas Peterson and Matthew Peterson. John Paul was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Earl E. Long. Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Pauls family and his services.
