Mabel was born June 16, 1919, in Blue Mound, IL, the daughter of Everett and Luella Zimmerman. She was a 1936 graduate of Blue Mound High School. She married William Hoefer on January 12, 1946, in Blue Mound and later moved to Sioux City, IA where she lived until 1994. Mabel also lived in Ankeny, IA; Spirit Lake, IA; and most recently Iowa City, IA.
Throughout her many moves, she was always an active member of her local church and found a ministry in folding worship bulletins. She was an active supporter of Youth for Christ and served on the board of Siouxland Youth for Christ in Sioux City. Mabel truly had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening of all kinds. She was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes and enjoyed watching them whenever they played. Mabel treasured the role of Grandma and spending time with her large family watching the children play. She also loved time alone with a good book, sometimes reading more than one per week. Above all else her relationship with Jesus brought her the greatest joy in life.
Mabel is survived by her six children: Richard Hoefer (Marylu) of Coralville, IA, Jan Holland (Lee) of Jonesboro, GA, Sue Downing (Dick) of Spirit Lake, IA, Linda McCaman (Gary) of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Sarah Weeks (Kevin) of LaMoille, IL and Chris Hoefer (Sheila) of Grimes, IA; fourteen (14) grandchildren: Bill, John, Brian, Laura, Tim, Michael, Stephen, Jennifer, Andy, Kristina, Nathan, Adam, Jonathan, and Jacob; and twenty-seven (27) great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Hoefer, her parents and her three sisters, Lucille, Virginia and Gertie.
Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Mabel's family and her services.
