Condolences
Through the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association I have just learned of Tim's passing, and wish to express my condolences to his family and friends. I had the honor of serving with Tim in Vietnam, and have fond recollections of his intelligence, humanity, gentle wit, and skill and dedication as a medical evacuation pilot. Tim was a good man to fly with, well respected by his crews and his fellow pilots. He wrote a lot of poetry in those days, and whether any of it was any good I have no idea -- but through that writing he seemed to manitain a more balanced sense of himself and the war than a lot of the rest of us were managing to do. Again, my sympathies to all his friends and family. Godspeed, Tim.
Tim and I spent some great years together from '66-'69, exploring the USA. I, too, have a volume of his poetry from that era, which I read through a few days ago, filled with descriptions and emotions and insights. I'm very glad to have had him as a friend.
I also worked with Tim at University Housing. He taught me a great deal and helped me get a foot in the door with my career, as well as helping me decide that IT was a good path for me. I came into the student position with minimal experience and now I am a full time programmer! He always took time to help explain things, no matter how busy he was. He'd also always have a moment to listen to anything going on outside of work as well. I can remember several times he sat down and helped me with projects I had going on outside of work.
I worked with Tim for several years at University Housing IT. He gave me my first job during my college career. I've learned a lot from him and will always remember my years with him. He had a strong passion for helping others succeed and put education first and foremost. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
It was my honor to call Tim my friend. We worked in different areas at the University. I was fortunate to also work on a few shared projects with Tim.
In all the years together I was always able to count on Tim. He was one of the most humble people I have known and never had a bad word to say about anyone.
My condolences go out to Tim's family, co workers and friends. Anyone who knew Tim was very fortunate and better off for having known him. He truly was one of the very special people on this earth and mere words can't describe how kind, humble, and what a great human being he was.
To Tim's family......I have thought of Tim so many times during the past 40 years. He and I exchanged many letters while he was in Viet Nam, and he sent me three notebooks of poems written during that period of his life. Tim means a lot to me, and I am really sorry to hear of his illness and passing. His family should have these volumes of poetry if you don't already. Please let me know how I can get them to you.
I am deeply saddened by Tim's passing, but proud and priviledged to have known such a kind, caring and insightful man. My heartfelt sympathies for his family.
Bobby----I am so very sorry for your loss. Tim was a great man and I know you were so proud of him. I have not seen your family in years but please extend my deepest condolences to those that remember me.
With love and prayers at your time of sorrow.

I am saddened to learn of Tim's passing. Although we had lost contact with each other after my move to the Chicago area, we had worked together daily during Tim's time at the College of Medicine. Tim's dedication, hard work, and creativity resulted on our developing what was, at the time, one of the top admissions application processing systems in the country. My life is richer because Tim was part of it. He will be missed. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family.
I had the privilege of working with Tim for the last 5 years or so at The University of Iowa. We worked together on several occasions and he was always a pleasure to work with. He was very appreciative of others and was very sincere in his comments. He was also very technically competent and would typically have worked through all of the obvious troubleshooting steps before asking for help. I could always count on him to have a legitimate problem when he called.
Thank you Mr. Bates for your military service. WELCOME HOME BROTHER!
Tori and Bobbi, I am so sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers!
Tim and I first met each other in the 7th grade at Sudlow Junior High School in Davenport in 1963. We became instant friends and shared many great times during our formative teenage years. He was a very giving and compassionate man who has passed too early. May God bless Tim and his entire family.
We are very grateful that Tim contacted us a few months ago after not communicating for a number of years. We have many fond memories of a great man.

Tim, You were a great person who was such a great teacher for me.! You helped me through many of my computer screw ups and always made time and patience for me and my computer skills. One of my fondest and embarrassing moments is when I somehow got onto a porn sight and you had to come over and get me out of it. I was so embarrassed!!!! But the great person that you are, you made me feel so much better when you said, "ithas happened to others also before!"
So sorry to hear of Tims' passing. I've known Tim for about 10 years and he was always willing to share his knowledge of computers and the IT business. Always looked forward to him passing through the kitchen to commend us on a dish he enjoyed for lunch, especially his all time fav Creamy Chichen Almond soup! I didn't realize what a man he was until I read the obit, he was such a humble man. Rest in Peace Tim! Love ya man!
I'm glad I got to hang with Commander Comet the last month of his life. I hope he enjoyed that time as much as I did. Here's to ya bud. Horse Badorties will miss you.
Tim was always asking me if I had everything I needed to do my job. Thanks to him, the answer has always been yes. Not only did he make sure that I (and the rest of the department) had the proper computer equipment necessary to perform our jobs and serve our students, but he also provided the intellectual support that those of less tech-savvy neededin a very user-friendly way. Since I've known Tim, I've had his voice inside of my head on occasion reminding me of special computer tips and little no-no'sall valuable advice. I'm sure that voice will always remain there, a treasured reminder of a very special co-worker, mentor, and friend. Tim will surely be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with Tim's family.
