Obituary of Tim Haven Bates III

Tim Haven Bates III (60), died peacefully December 23rd, 2010 at the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa after a long battle with cancer. Tim has chosen to be cremated and interned in a private ceremony with family and friends at Rock Island Arsenal Veterans Cemetery. Cremation will be handled by Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Services of Iowa City. Tim, the son of Tim Haven Jr. and Roberta June Bates, was born May 14, 1950 in Omaha, Nebraska. He graduated from Davenport Central High School in 1968 and briefly attended Iowa State University before joining the military. Tim served his country with distinction as a MedEvac helicopter pilot in both the Active and Reserve Army spanning 20 years from 1970 to 1990. Tim obtained the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3 during his military career. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his heroism and 20 air medals while flying in Vietnam. After active duty, Tim attended the University of Iowa where he obtained a Liberal Arts degree with emphasis in English, Philosophy, Literature, Science and the Arts, and Computer Science. Tim also obtained a minor in East Asian Language and Literature –Mandarin Chinese. Tim was employed at the University of Iowa for 30 years beginning in July 1981 as an ECC Dispatcher for AirCare Emergency Transport. In 1984 Tim began a career in computer programming with the UI College of Medicine. In 1998, Tim continued his IT career working as Manager, Technology Services with University Housing & Dining. Tim was hired as the first dedicated full-time IT professional in University Housing & Dining (then Residence Services). During his 12 plus years with the department, Tim was instrumental in introducing new IT systems to the department and supporting the overall IT needs of the department. During this time, Tim’s role expanded from a one-man IT operation to supervision of 5 full-time professional IT staff plus numerous students. Tim dedicated countless hours to his work in the department, and was a role model to many. His impact to the department and all who worked with him will be missed. Tim is survived by his mother Roberta Bates, sister and brother-in-law Connie and Gary Perrin, brother and sister-in-law Bill and Betty Bates, brother, Bob Bates, and sister and brother-in-law Tori and Mike Twigg. Tim's family and friends would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to the staff at Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Iowa City Hospice, University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, and Veterans Medical Center of Iowa City. These organizations provided Tim and his family extraordinary support and loving care during his illness.
