Obituary of Lucille E. Knebel

Lucille E. “Lucy” Knebel, 84, longtime resident of the Hills area died Friday, February 18, 2011, at Oaknoll Retirement Residence in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 22, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hills with the Reverend William Kneemiller officiating. Burial will be at the St. Stanislaus Cemetery near Hills. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church, concluding with a parish Vigil Service at 8 pm. Lucille Elizabeth Kron was born December 29, 1926, in rural Johnson County, Iowa the daughter of Louis M. and Leocadia C. (Sueppel) Kron. She attended St. Mary’s School in Riverside, graduating in 1945. Lucille married Louis J. Knebel on August 18, 1948, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Riverside. Lucille worked at Hills Grain & Feed before starting employment with Advanced Drainage Systems in Iowa City where she worked twenty-four years as office manager, retiring in 1992. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hills, where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She loved to quilt, cook, and can Lou’s home-grown fruits and vegetables. She also enjoyed family vacations and traveling with the Friends Club of Hills Bank & Trust. She and her husband, Louis enjoyed bowling on a number of leagues throughout the years at Colonial Lanes. Lucy was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Basketball Fan, listening to the game just the other night. However, most dear to Lucy’s heart were her granddaughters and great-granddaughter. Her family includes her daughter and son-in-law, Suzann and Roger Slaughter of Hills; two granddaughters, Wendi Slaughter of Iowa City and Angie Slaughter of Hills; great-granddaughter, Alyse Slaughter; brother, Elmo John Kron (Virginia) of Riverside; brother-in-law, Leo Knebel of Hills; sisters-in-law, Leona Kron of Iowa City; Vivian Knebel, Marilyn Knebel both of Hills and Evelyn Knebel of Riverside; a special nephew, Bob Knebel of Riverside. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Louis; infant triplet daughters, and infant granddaughter; and three brothers, Cleo, Ambrose, and Cletus.
