Obituary of John R. Whetstine

John R. Whetstine, 73, of Iowa City, died at home, Monday, April 4, 2011 surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 8, 2011 at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home and Friday one hour prior to the service. Burial with military honors will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. He attended school in Wellman, and years later in June of 1964 married Carroll Hime, in Iowa City. During Vietnam, John served in the U.S. Army. He was a hard worker but also enjoyed his time outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved auto racing and was a long-time fan of Hawkeye football. His family includes wife, Carroll; daughters, Barbara of Iowa, Ramona of Tiffin, Jonnette of Oxford; son, Jerry Whetstine of Iowa City; grandchildren, Michael, Jeffrey, Jeremy, Melissa, Audrey, Stephanie, Nicole and Beau; great-grandchildren, Lily, Patrick, Wyatt, Neil and Brody; brother Charles Whetstine of Solon and sisters, Sandra Thompson of Keota and Margie Tyree. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, Uncle, Glen Chapman and several other family members.
