Obituary of Kathrynn M. Gay
Kathrynn M.“Katie” Gay, 87, of Iowa City, died Monday, August 8, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, August 12, 2011, at the First Christian Church in Coralville. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m., Thursday at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Memorial donations can be made in Katie’s memory to the First Christian Church of Coralville, or the College of Nursing c/o University of Iowa Foundation. Kathrynn Ann Murphy was born January 12, 1924, in Iowa City, the daughter of Edward J. and Ida (Orr) Murphy. She attended schools in Iowa City graduating from City High School with the Class of 1941. Katie went on to the State University of Iowa where she received her degree in nursing in 1946, where she was Senior Class President. On September 1, 1946, she was united in marriage to George L. Gay. For a number of years she taught nursing through the School of Nursing at the University of Iowa, and also through nursing program at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. She and her husband, George purchased the Oathout Funeral Home in 1964, where she had been an integral part of the George L. Gay Funeral Home for many years.
Katie was a member of the First Christian Church, the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Jessamine Chapter of O.E.S., Bethlehem Chapter of White Shrine of Jerusalem, Rebekah Lodge #416, serving as Past Noble Grand; University of Iowa Alumni Association, Iowa City Woman’s Club, served as past President; Nathaniel Fellows DAR, Past Regent; Music Study Club, Past President; and a member of the North Scott Social Circle.
Her family includes her husband, George; daughter, Anita H. Gay Hartwig (Kevin Hartwig) of Iowa City; son, George E. “Ted” Gay (Patti) of North Richland Hills, TX; grandchildren, Kory and Kerri Hartwig, Victoria, Diana Kirkwood (Matt) and William Gay; a great-grandson, Jaiden Feedee.
