Eleanor Ruth Trummel
1915 - 2011
Condolences
Eleanor was so special to me. We shared so many wonderful conversations at Oaknoll. I remember the first time when I sat
with her for the first time and had a long chat. I was in awe of
finding someone her age who was so open-minded and accepting
of all types of people and ideas. She seemed to grow ageless in my
eyes. We both marveled how two peple with 40 some years between
them could relate to one another so well. My Friday afternoons have
been a bit empty since she's been gone and I feel a large part of my
day (and life) is missing. I even found one of her old grocery list
in my pocket the other day.
It was so hard for me to let her go, I can only imagine how hard it was
for you. A truly wonderful lady.
Thank you for letting me share her last days with you. It meant so much to say good- bye.
I will always remember Aunt Eleanor as kind and giving.
We will hold a memorial service for Mom this Saturday, Nov. 12th at 10 AM at First United Methodist Church in Iowa City.
Thank you, Arlys, for that wonderful picture of Mom. I don't think I had ever seen it before. It's a good one.
Here's a photo from Eleanor's ISC graduation.
I'm very sorry for your loss. Please extend my sympathies and those of the Arnold family to your siblings and other family members. My mother, Thelma, was one of the gang of four, as I liked to think of themThelma Chambers Arnold, Eleanor Eyestone Trummel, Mavis Sharts Young, and Alice Cross Albrightwho became lifelong friends at Iowa State College (later University). When we were young kids, I know these ladies got together whenever possible at ISU reunions and elsewhere and kept in touch for many years beyond mom's 1940 ISC graduation!
Sad, to say, my mother (Thelma) died in June of 2005 at the age of 86 (almost 87) and just two weeks before what would have been Mom & Dad's 59th wedding anniversary. She had been in failing health and in a nursing home for about a year and a half before that. Then in May of 2008, dad (Roy) also died at age 90 after about 5 months in a nursing home. They are sadly missed, as I'm sure your mother and dad are by those who knew and loved them.
We'll be thinking of you and sending prayers and good thoughts your way as you memorialize your mom's life on November 12.
This candle is an avatar for the real candle I lit at the side altar consecrated to the virgin Mary at Saint Mary's by the Sea Episcopal church in Pacific Grove, California the day before Mrs. Trummel's passing. Mrs. Trummel lived a good, long -- sometimes difficult-- life. She exerted a great deal of influence on her children, and all whose lives she touched. May she forever rest in peace in the presence of God's infinite love.
I have created a slide show of images from Mom's life. Click on the "Life Images" tab above to see the slide show.

Eleanor told me she planned to live to be 100 so I was sorry to hear of her passing. We connected a number of years ago at an "old cousins' reunion" in Des Moines, IA, and shared an interest in our Irish roots. I visited her at her apartment in Iowa City and have a copy of the book she wrote. I'll miss our chats and sharing of family information.
When I moved my mom (Flo Walker-sister to Eleanor and also Esther Eyestone), my dad, and Aunt Esther (Eyestone) to Tulsa, OK in 2005, I also reconnected with Aunt Eleanor. Up to that point, it had mostly been just Christmas cards, and connection at occasional family reunions. However, in 2005, Aunt Eleanor and I began corresponding more regularly. I enjoyed hearing what she had to say, and keeping abreast of what was happening with her. I found in my parents things the book Aunt Eleanor wrote, "Growing Up Eleanor". I think it is most interesting and a valuable family record that I cherish. I'll miss Aunt Eleanor. I'm so sorry for your loss. There is no loss like losing your mom.
She was a wonderful woman and will be missed. In recent years I have also found a passion for genealogy. I have been cataloging the photographs from Clark and Dorothy Griswold, my grandparents, and is where I found the photo attached photo. I have enjoyed being able to see how everyone in the family looked when they were younger...and how much they still look the same.
