Obituary of Arlene R. Dolan

Arlene R. Dolan, 81, of Iowa City, died Monday, March 17, 2014, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City following a short illness. Arlene was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dr. Kenneth D. Dolan, formerly of the Department of Radiology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City with burial following at Cedar Memorial Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 5:30 – 8:30 PM, Friday, March 21, 2014, at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Memorials in Arlene's name can be made to the American Diabetes Association or the National Kidney Association. Arlene Rose Pisney was born at home on December 8, 1932, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Louis and Libby (Bulicek) Pisney. She has two sisters, Dorothy (Leo) Bena of Cedar Rapids and Pat (Pete) Sargeant, now of Kinston, North Carolina. As a child, Arlene helped on her family's farm. She enjoyed horseback riding, fishing, playing the accordion, and social activities with friends and with her parents' large extended families. She graduated from McKinley High School in Cedar Rapids. She attended Iowa State University, where she participated in the VEISHA Parade, and graduated from the University of Iowa. On June 20, 1954, she married Kenneth D. Dolan in Cedar Rapids. After marriage, Arlene and Ken, and their children Cathy Dolan of Iowa City, Ann Dolan-Bishop now of Davenport and Chris (Sheryl) Dolan of Cedar Rapids, lived all over the United States while Ken finished his medical and Navy training, finally settling in Iowa City. Here, Arlene participated in many activities, including the Girl Scouts of America, The University of Iowa Newcomer's and Women's Clubs, Mercy Marathon and Hy-Vee bridge clubs, Project Green, Fairview and Hi Point Ladies Golf Leagues, the KZ many years. Arlene enjoyed travel, gardening, reading, playing in golf tournaments and spending time with friends and family, including her niece, Linda Wedemeir and family in Cedar Rapids, and her nephews, Jeff, Jaime, and Jon and families, in North Carolina. Most especially, she enjoyed caring for pets, including her poodle, Holly, and spending time with her grandchildren: Katelyn Bishop, and Kenyon, Eva and Fiona Dolan. Arlene's family would like to thank the staff and physicians at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Mercy Home Health Care and Lantern Park for the compassionate care they have provided to Arlene and her family. They would also like to thank Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City for providing services to and caring for Arlene's family.
