Obituary of Ruth E. Detweiler
Ruth E. Detweiler, 88, formerly of Iowa City, died at her home, Tuesday, April 21, 2015, in Brownsville, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 27, 2015, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery with a reception to follow at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Ruth's memory to the Ruth Detweiler Memorial Fund. Ruth Evelyn Marine was born November 30, 1926, in North English, Iowa, the daughter of Avery and Zella (McDowel) Marine. Following graduation from Wellman High School, she attended Iowa State Teachers College, the University of Iowa and she graduated from Iowa Wesleyn College with her teaching degree. On September 11, 1948, she was united in marriage to Dwain A. Detweiler at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. For a number of years Ruth taught rural schools in Washington, Iowa, and Johnson Counties. She then began a career that spanned nearly 25 years of teaching for the West Branch Community Schools, retiring in 1988. She and Dwain have lived in Brownsville for many years, enjoying not only the weather, but dancing and traveling and their many friends they made over the years.
Ruth is survived by her husband Dwain; three children: Linda Bang (Bob) of Iowa City, Cheryl Milder (Larry) of Blue Grass, IA and Carroll Detweiler of Williamsburg, IA; six grandchildren, Troy Detweiler, Jessica Weist, Avery Bang, Kendra Elledge, Ryan Detweiler and Thomas Bang; and seven great-grandchildren, Codey Detweiler, Caleb Detweiler, Ava Weist, Emery Weist, Lily Elledge, Elsie Detweiler, and Mason Detweiler.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Carroll and Marion; sister, Vera Ruegsegger and son, Lynn.
She will be missed but her influence will live on in all those whose lives she touched and those who loved her.
